Sugar Land, TX – Sugar Land Town Center is set to come alive on Feb. 24 from 2-5 p.m., as Stacey Allen, founder and Artistic Director of Nia’s Daughters Movement Collective, takes center stage to present “The Fairytale Project".
The innovative and culturally rich performance is a part of Sugar Land's Black History Month celebration, promising an enchanting experience for audiences of all ages.
Nia’s Daughters Movement Collective, established in 2018, is a dynamic group of multigenerational Black women dancers and multidisciplinary artists committed to showcasing culturally competent dance works that narrate the stories of Black women and girls. “The Fairytale Project” is a historical tale tailored for children, depicting a modern-day African American family reconnecting with their East Texas roots through extraordinary encounters with the past.
With choreography deeply rooted in and inspired by the African Diaspora, Stacey Allen weaves the love story of Jim and Winnie Shankle – pioneers of the Texas Freedom Colony in Shankleville, Texas – and their descendants. The narrative unfolds the journey of the Shankle family as newly emancipated African-Americans building an independent town.
The 45-minute performance will grace the deck area adjacent to the steps of Sugar Land City Hall, 2700 Town Center Blvd. North. To add to the cultural celebration, there will be two 20-minute dance workshops conducted before and after the performance. Attendees can also explore and support local vendors on-site for product sales, including a food vendor.
Sha Davis, Sugar Land's Civic Arts manager, expressed her excitement and said: “We are thrilled to expand our Arts programming into live performance and launching our very first Community Engagement event. It is an honor to host such an incredible artist collective in effort to honor our residents and local businesses."
The Sugar Land community is invited to join in this momentous celebration, embracing the richness of Black history through the artistry of Nia’s Daughters Movement Collective.
