Default Show Cause Hearings

Failure to comply with a court order issued by the Sugar Land Municipal Court resulting in a conviction with an unpaid balance requires your appearance before the court at a Default Show Cause Hearing. You must show cause as to why you failed to comply with the terms of the judgment rendered against you, and why a Capias Pro Fine Warrant should not be issued and you should not be committed to jail until the unpaid fines and costs are satisfied.

During this hearing, you will have the opportunity to have your financial ability assessed by the Collections Improvement Program.

Notice of this hearing has been mailed to your last known address on file.

Hearing Details

Hearings are held the second and fourth Friday of every month with exception to holidays.

Check-in begins at 12:30 p.m. and ends promptly at 1:30 p.m.
Failure to arrive during check-in will result in a Failure to Appear.

Failure to Appear for the Hearing

Failure to appear will result in a Capias Pro Fine Warrant being issued for your arrest. This is the court’s final attempt to notify you before a warrant is issued.

Avoid the Hearing by Paying in Full

No appearance is required if the total balance is paid in full before the scheduled hearing.

New Arrangement or Non-Monetary Option (Community Service)

To be considered for a new payment arrangement or other non-monetary compliance options (if eligible), you must submit the Financial Information/Payment Ability Form along with all required supporting financial documents. See the Payment plans and extensions webpage for more information.

Mandatory: Submit the completed form at least 48 hours before your hearing.
Note: Submission does NOT replace your required court appearance.

Submit online through the CIP Submission Portal:

The Collections Improvement Program (CIP)

The CIP monitors compliance and takes appropriate action when defendants fail to meet court-ordered requirements. If a defendant does not complete a deferred program within the required timeframe and is subsequently convicted, the CIP issues a payment extension order for the remaining fine, providing additional time to satisfy the financial obligation.
Default Show Cause Process Graphic shows one collumn beginning with Deferred Programs, Deferred Dsiposition and Driving Safety Course, followed by Non-Compliance, then 30 Day Extension, then Non-Compliance, then Default Show Cause Hearing. A second collumn begins with Payment Arrangement, Payment Plan, 30 Day Extension, Community Service, followed by Non-Compliance, then Default Show Cause Hearing. Both collumns flow into a center collumn that begins with Consistent Non-Compliance with Court Approved Plans, then Final Order, and lastly Capias Pro Fine Warrant.
The CIP actively tracks progress on the following adjudicated cases:

  • Community Service Orders
  • Final Orders
  • Payment Arrangements
