Captain Greg Suter
Captain Greg Suter grew up in Sugar Land and is a graduate of Clements High School. He is an Eagle Scout and obtained his Bachelor of Business Administration with a Major in Management from Texas State University. Prior to joining the Sugar Land Police Department in 2009, Captain Suter spent time in both Fire and EMS.
Captain Suter’s career at the Sugar Land Police Department has included time as a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Instructor, Patrol Sergeant, and Lieutenant. He sits on the City’s Benefits Committee, Onboarding Committee, has oversight of multiple Department grant programs, and is the Chair of the Sugar Land Police Department’s Training Advisory Board. He was the lead Department liaison for a staffing analysis conducted in partnership with Texas A&M’s Bush School of Government and has conducted multiple market compensation analyses with recommendations & implementation costs. He is also Fort Bend County’s representative for the 100 Club of Houston’s Award Selection Committee.
Previously, he served on our regional SWAT Team for over 12 years where he was Sugar Land’s SWAT Team Leader and a team medic. He is an ALERRT Instructor and was a founding member of the Police Department’s High Threat Team where he helped develop our Command Competency Lab to ensure our personnel are prepared to respond to active violence incidents. He has coordinated multiple large-scale, multi-agency tactical and medical training scenarios. He is also passionate about working with patrol to continuously improve their tactical and technical proficiency as well as their ability to implement the 5 C’s (Tactical Priorities) on complex, evolving scenes.
He established the Department’s Narcan & tactical medical training programs including developing all training curriculum and equipment selection. He has trained civilian groups as well as law enforcement partners at the local, State, & Federal levels with the goal of minimizing the loss of life in all violent encounters. Through this training, Sugar Land’s Officers have provided life-saving care to over 60 patients and have multiple documented lives saved.
Captain Suter has received the Chief’s Award of Excellence 5 times, been named a City Champion employee 3 times, was the Department’s Officer of the Year in 2013, was awarded the Police Commendation Bar for outstanding performance involving great risk to his personal safety in 2017, and has also received the 100 Club of Houston’s Officer of the Year Award.
Captain Suter is currently assigned to the Technical Services Bureau and is responsible for Training, Recruitment, Crime Prevention, and the Crisis Intervention Team.
