The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will be implementing road closures throughout the duration of this project. Notifications will be posted as they are received from TxDOT.
Brazos River Bridge Construction Update
Update: Mar 15, 2026
TxDOT has officially begun Phase III construction along US-59/I-69 over the Brazos River.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has started Phase III construction along US-59/I-69 over the Brazos River, including work on the northbound main lanes and northbound frontage road.
This phase continues important repairs addressing erosion near the bridge. Completing this work now helps protect the long-term safety and reliability of this critical regional corridor used daily by residents, businesses, schools and emergency services. We recognize this construction will create a temporary inconvenience for commuters and nearby neighbors. The City of Sugar Land is working closely with TxDOT and regional partners to help minimize disruptions and keep the community moving safely throughout construction.
Expected Timeline
- March 2026 – Phase III construction starts
- March 2027 – Estimated completion of the northbound frontage road
- December 2027 – Estimated overall project completion
Construction schedules may adjust due to weather conditions.
Brazos River Park and Crown Festival Park Access
Access to Festival Blvd will be restricted with the northbound feeder closure. Visitors should plan to use University Blvd. to access Brazos River Park and Crown Festival Park during construction.
Neighborhood Detours
- Drivers who typically use Riverbrook Dr. to exit Greatwood will follow posted detours to access northbound US-59.
- Increased traffic is expected near the US-59 and SH-99 intersections.
- Greatwood residents may experience longer travel times during peak hours.
Business Access
River Park Shopping Center and Greatwood Professional Center businesses will remain open throughout construction. While traffic patterns may temporarily shift, access to these locations will be maintained.
What Drivers Should Expect
Heavier traffic is anticipated on US-59 northbound main lanes and frontage road during peak travel times. Allowing extra travel time and following posted signage will help improve traffic flow and keep everyone safe.
The City of Sugar Land continues coordinating with TxDOT, local school districts, Fort Bend County, the toll road authority, and emergency responders to reduce impacts and maintain safe access for the community. We appreciate your patience as this necessary work moves forward and helps ensure safe, reliable travel for years to come.

Mountain Bike trails, including the Tower Trail and the New Territory Bike Trail that are in the US 59/Brazos River Bridge Construction Zone, are closed to the public near the construction zone. When warning signs and barriers are disregarded it creates serious safety concerns for riders and workers at the construction site. For your safety please stay away from the construction zone and avoid those areas on those trail paths while they work to complete the Brazos River Bridge Project.
Nightly Closures
Update: Feb 12, 2026
Two (2) inside lanes of Southbound US-59/I-69 will be closed between University Boulevard and Riverbrook Drive. The three (3) outside lanes will remain open. The feeder road will also be open to help reduce congestion.
Dates: Monday (2/23) to Friday (2/27) from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.
About this Project
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will begin construction to extend the length of the IH 69 bridge over the Brazos River. The project is expected to take approximately 38 months.
Here is a helpful list of Frequently Asked Questions.
The construction will require alternative lane closures of the IH 69 main lanes and frontage roads over the Brazos River. The City will share lane closure notifications as they are received from TxDOT. On-site digital message boards will also be used to provide updates. Residents are asked to be mindful of work crews, expect traffic delays, and when possible, avoid the area to prevent traffic congestion.
To protect the safety of the general public from further erosion of the Brazos River bank, TxDOT permanently closed the Brazos River Turnaround in July 2016 and will begin construction to extend the limits of the IH 69 bridge over the Brazos River. This extension will relocate the abutment, the point where the bridge ends, away from the threat of future erosion.
The City is also implementing projects to restrict future erosion. Last November, the Texas General Land Office (GLO) announced the approval of approximately $38M to the City and Fort Bend County for Brazos River erosion protection at several locations within the city limits, including at the IH 69 bridge.
Project Presentation
The City hosted a meeting on May 22 where staff from the Texas Department of Transportation was available to discuss their U.S. Highway 59 bridge project over the Brazos River. The presentations slides are available.
