City of Sugar Land Launches First-Ever Artist in Residency Program with Celebrated Houston Artist

2025 City News Releases Posted on February 07, 2025

Sugar Land, TX – 2/1/2025 – The City of Sugar Land Civic Arts Division is proud to announce the launch of its inaugural Artist in Residency program, which will feature groundbreaking multidisciplinary artist Bevin Biggers. Beginning February 8, 2025, Biggers will take up residence at the Lost Creek Community Center (3703 Lost Creek Blvd.) to create a one-of-a-kind wooden sculpture as part of the City’s Black History Month program.

Hailing from Houston, Texas, Biggers is known for her innovative wooden sculptures that explore themes of identity, heritage, and resilience. Her two-week residency with the City of Sugar Land will culminate in the unveiling of her completed sculpture at the Black History Month Program in Sugar Land Town Square on February 22, 2025, from 12-4 PM. After its debut, the sculpture will be moved to a secondary City-approved location for public display for the remainder of February.

“We are thrilled to honor Bevin Biggers as our very first artist in residence,” said Sha Davis, Civic Arts Manager for the City of Sugar Land. “This program is a reflection of our commitment to supporting local artists, promoting cultural awareness, and fostering creativity in our community. Bevin’s talent and vision are unparalleled, and her work will serve as a symbol of the City’s dedication to the arts and artist growth.”

Biggers was selected for this historic residency from the Sugar Land Artist Roster, a collection of talented artists from diverse disciplines who are connected with the City for various projects. During her residency, Biggers will host two open studio hours, where community members can visit her workspace at the Lost Creek Community Center to witness the artistic process firsthand. The open studio dates will be announced on the Civic Arts Division’s social media channels and website, where audiences can also follow along with updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses of Biggers’ creative journey.

“I am overwhelmed with pride and excitement!” said Bevin Biggers, reflecting on the honor of being selected. “It’s an absolute honor to be given the opportunity to be the first to take this journey into uncharted territory! As a Black woman and the inaugural artist in this residency, this moment is iconic, monumental, and deeply meaningful.”

The City of Sugar Land Civic Arts Division’s Artist in Residency program represents a significant milestone in the City’s ongoing efforts to celebrate and support the arts while enriching the cultural landscape of the community.
