Sugar Land Civic Arts Division Announces Collaborative Mural Project at Mayfield Park

2025 City News Releases Posted on January 24, 2025

Sugar Land, TX – January 24, 2025 – The City of Sugar Land Civic Arts Division is excited to announce a transformative mural project for the basketball court at Mayfield Park. This vibrant work of art will celebrate the neighborhood's rich history, strong community ties, and shared vision for the future. The mural, painted by internationally acclaimed artist Alex Arzu, will be created in collaboration with the Mayfield Park Liaison Group and is set to begin installation on January 27, 2025, with completion scheduled for February 15, 2025.

Renowned for his dynamic and deeply meaningful public art, Alex Arzu was chosen for this project because of his ability to craft designs that resonate with local communities. For this mural, Arzu immersed himself in the culture and history of Mayfield Park and Sugar Land as a whole. His design features a map of Sugar Land as the mural’s backdrop, symbolizing the connection between Mayfield Park and the broader city, while telling the unique story of the neighborhood.

The Mayfield Park Liaison Group, a dedicated team of residents led by community advocate Vernon Smallwood, played a pivotal role in shaping the mural’s design. Their input ensured the artwork authentically reflects the voices, values, and heritage of the Mayfield Park community.

“It means a lot to me and the entire community to connect with the City of Sugar Land and the Civic Arts Division in this way,” said Vernon Smallwood. “We hope this beautiful mural is just the beginning of many more projects in Mayfield Park and the start of a long-lasting partnership.”

“Vernon Smallwood’s leadership has been instrumental in uniting the community for this project,” said Sha Davis, Sugar Land Civic Arts Manager. “This mural represents more than art—it’s a celebration of Mayfield Park’s unique story, a reflection of its people, and a testament to the power of collaboration. With Alex Arzu’s extraordinary vision and the heartfelt contributions of the community, we hope this project inspires more partnerships like this to bridge communities through art and shared purpose.”

To ensure the safety of the community during the mural’s creation, the basketball court will be fenced off and temporarily closed. The court will reopen shortly after the project’s completion, offering a revitalized and inspiring space for residents to enjoy.

This project underscores the City of Sugar Land’s dedication to using public art as a means of storytelling, community building, and transformation. The Civic Arts Division extends its gratitude to the local American Legion for hosting meetings with the artist and the Mayfield Park Liaison Group.
