Updated Building Codes Adoption

The City of Sugar Land is dedicated to a vibrant, sustainable, and resilient community for the present and future. Our goal is to safeguard public health, safety, and welfare by upholding the construction regulations set by federal, state, and local authorities.

Updated Code Adoption

Sugar Land will be adopting the 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC) and the 2021 International Code Council (ICC) codes in 2023, with an anticipated delayed effective date of January 1, 2024.

The ICC and NEC codes are on the leading edge of safety, sustainability, and efficiency for building, fire, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems.

The city is also reviewing and updating our current development code.

Code Adoption Process and Milestones

Staff is currently reviewing the Codes to determine the significant changes between the 2015 Codes (the City’s current adopted version) and the 2021 Codes. During this process, staff is identifying any local amendments that are appropriate due to unique circumstances in Sugar Land, or for the continuation of polices previously approved by City Council.
