City of Sugar Land

Storm Drain Marking Installation Program

The storm drains within the City of Sugar Land were designed to capture and transport rainwater runoff into community waterways to prevent flooding.  As rainwater moves overland, it picks up pollutants and deposits them into local water bodies.  People don’t often realize that everyday activities such as fertilizing a lawn, using pesticides, or washing a vehicle can have negative environmental effects on the community.  Anything entering a storm sewer system is discharged untreated into the community waterways.

In order to prevent pollution within our waterways and to educate residents on the effects their actions may have on the environment, the City of Sugar Land in partnership with Keep Sugar Land Beautiful (KSLB) has initiated a Storm Drain Marker Installation Program.  Participating in the program is easy. The City provides all the supplies needed to mark the drains. Volunteers are given a map of their designated neighborhood and a list of instructions in order to locate and mark the storm drains. Volunteers also place door tags on residents’ doors informing them of the program and the importance of protecting the community’s waterways.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please visit the Keep Sugar Land Beautiful website at www.kslb.org or contact Vicki Gist, Keep Sugar Land Beautiful Executive Director, at vickigist@kslb.org or 281-313-5752.
