City of Sugar Land

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

City employees are often asked if Sugar Land is spelled as one word or two. The definitive answer to that common question is that Sugar Land is two separate words. There is a misconception that at one time it was spelled as one word, "Sugar Land," and then changed to the two word spelling. The confusion in spelling is understandable, especially to newcomers who see some company names use the one word version. Businesses chose that particular spelling to meet their needs, and it has no connection to the City spelling of Sugar Land. The City's name was derived from the land on which Sugar Land is built, one rich with sugar cane and still the home of Imperial Holly Corporation, one of the nation's largest producers and marketers of refined sugar and the oldest continuously operating business in the state of Texas.
