Environmental Week
April 13 - 19, 2008 - A Series of Fun and Educational Events
The City of Sugar Land and Keep Sugar Land Beautiful (KSLB) are hosting the second annual Environmental Week from April 13-19. The week will include a variety of environmental activities for all ages and feature a collection of one-day events and community recycling programs.
Single Member Council District Recycling Challenge
Throughout Environmental Week, the City and KSLB will sponsor a Single Member Council District Recycling Challenge encouraging residents to recycle curbside on their designated recycling day in order to determine which District has the highest percentage of residential curbside recycling participants. The winning District will be recognized at the April 21 City Council meeting.
Recycled Plastic Art Challenge
The City and KSLB are also hosting the Recycled Plastic Art Challenge, a program designed to utilize post-consumer recyclables for the design and construction of animal sculptures. Two local school groups will design and construct these sculptures for display within City Hall during Environmental Week: The Green Team at The Honor Roll School and Fort Settlement Teen Leadership. The participating organizations will be recognized at the April 21 City Council meeting.
Environmental Movie Under the Moon CANCELLED
Due to the bad weather, this event has been cancelled.
Annual Earth Day Recycling Event
Sugar Land's annual Earth Day Recycling Event will take place Saturday, April 18, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the University of Houston Sugar Land Campus parking lot, 14000 University Boulevard. Items accepted include household electronic equipment, clothing and household items for reuse, used eyeglasses, documents for shredding, plastics (#1-7, excluding styrofoam) and aluminum cans. Limits on accepted items and charges may apply. Both working and non-working electronic equipment will be accepted for a $5 fee per item (or per 3-piece computer unit). Cell phones and pagers will be accepted without a fee.
Eco-Car Show and Concert in the Park
The Environmental Week activities will conclude with the Eco-Car Show -- a collection of environmentally friendly automobiles from several local car dealerships -- on Sunday, April 19 at Oyster Creek Park, 4033 State Highway 6 South, from 3-6 p.m. In conjunction with the Eco-Car Show, the City is hosting the first of Sugar Land's 2009 Concert in the Park series.
