April 13 - 19, 2008 - A Series of Fun and Educational Events

 

The City of Sugar Land and Keep Sugar Land Beautiful are hosting the first annual Environmental Week from April 13-19, a week of environmental activities for all ages. The following is a list of the week’s events.

Eco-Car Show and Concert in the Park

Eco Car Show and Concert in the ParkThe week begins Sunday, April 13, in Oyster Creek Park, 4033 State Highway 6 South, with a new event—the Eco-Car Show, a collection of environmentally friendly automobiles. Area car dealers will showcase vehicles from 3-6 p.m., and there will be give-aways and prize drawings that include free gas cards. The Eco-Car Show is being held in conjunction with the City’s “Concert in the Park,” series from 5 to 7 p.m.

Mercedes-Benz of Sugar Land will display a Zero Emission Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered Vehicle.

Eco Car Show and Concert in the ParkWhile taking advantage of the El Vibes concert (featuring Elvis tunes) you can enjoy the free children’s games and activities such as face painter or balloon artists and moonwalks. First Colony Lion’s Club will sell refreshments and snacks throughout the event.

Environmental Steward of the Year Award Presentation

Environmental Week continues Tuesday, April 15, at 5:30 p.m. at Sugar Land City Hall, 2700 Town Center Blvd. North, where City Council will present the Environmental Steward of the Year award to a person who has made singular efforts on behalf of the environment. Also that evening, the Fort Bend ISD Water Conservation Book Cover Contest winners will be announced.

Environmental Awareness Presentation

Staff will present information detailing current and future programs promoting environmental awareness on Wednesday, April 16, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., in Council Chambers at City Hall. A variety of issues will be discussed including water quality, water conservation, community recreation and public participation opportunities.


The Eco Show

“The Eco Show” will be presented on the Plaza at Town Square, on Thursday, April 17, at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. (rain location - First Colony Church of Christ 2140 First Colony Blvd).  This interactive magic show teaches students about litter prevention, recycling and waste management. All area students are invited.

Sugar Land H20 Expo and Environmental Movie Night

The H2O Expo, Sugar Land’s annual water festival, will take place on the Plaza at Town Square on Friday, April 18, from 4-7 p.m. The Expo will feature a fun atmosphere focused on water conservation and water quality themes.  Environmental entertainers will be on hand, including the Houston Zoo Mobile and Mad Science. The festival will also feature a variety of games and refreshments.  Following the H2O Expo, an “Environmental Movie Under the Moon” will be shown in Town Square. The movie begins at dusk and will be introduced by a surprise special guest.


Sugar Land Earth Day Recycling Event

Sugar Land’s annual Earth Day Recycling Event will take place Saturday, April 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the parking lot of Mercer Stadium, 16403 Lexington Blvd. Items accepted include household electronic equipment, clothing and household items for reuse, used eyeglasses, documents for shredding, plastics (#1 - #7) and aluminum cans. Limits on items accepted and charges apply. Please refer to the link below for additional information.
