Don't Pour Grease Down the Drain! Grease Clogs Sugar Land's Sewer System!
You can help protect Sugar Land's creeks, yards and homes from sewage overflows by properly disposing of cooking grease.
- NEVER pour grease down sink drains or into toilets. Dispose of cooled and solidified grease by combining it with kitty litter and double bagging it for your garbage collector. If you don't have kitty litter, pour the grease into a container and seal it before placing it into the garbage.
- Used liquefied cooking oils are accepted Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the City of Sugar Land Public Works Department at 111 Gillingham Lane, near the tire recycling center. City residents may dispose of up to 10 gallons of liquid cooking oil per week at no charge. The cooking oil recycling center is for residential customers only and includes only liquid cooking grade fats, oils and grease, NOT petroleum products. Please make sure that the cooking oil is not mixed with other fluids (water, petroleum products, soaps, etc). Do not fill any container while the cooking oil is still hot as this could cause the container to crack or split; let the oil cool down for a few minutes before filling a container. Used liquefied cooking oils will not be accepted if only contained in a pot. A sturdy plastic container is the preferred way to collect used cooking oil. Citizens are asked to place their containers of oil next to the tire recycling center for recycling.
- Put greasy food scraps in a sealed container or bag and place in the garbage cart.
- Place a basket/strainer in sink drains to prevent greasy food scraps from going into the garbage disposal. Empty contents of the basket/strainer into a sealed container or bag before placing in the garbage cart.
