INTRODUCTION & CRIME PREVENTION

Chief Steve Griffith, Assistant Chief Stuart Denton and Assistant Chief Douglas Brinkley will provide information and overview of the Police Department from its inception to the present. They will discuss where the Department has been and where it is going in the future. A question and answer session will follow. Students will hear Crime Prevention Oficer Amy Cummins (time permitting) explain methods that can be used to lessen your chances of becoming a victim of crime. The sergeant also explains what you should do in the event you do become a victim. Crime Prevention in your neighborhood is emphasized and explanations on how to start programs in the neighborhood to eliminate crime. Students will also tour the Sugar Land Police Department.
PATROL PROCEDURES

Introduction to the operation of the Patrol Division, beat structure, tactics and strategy of uniform patrol are discussed. Specialized instruction concerning the search of a building to locate an intruder is given.
USE OF FORCE - WEAPONS

Students are instructed on handgun safety and proper use and care of firearms. Instruction concerning the legal use of deadly force is given.
SATURDAY PRACTICAL F.A.T.S. TRAINING

Students will participate in a “Shoot-Don’t Shoot” scenario by utilizing the electronic firearms training system. Different interactive scenarios will allow the student to experience a variety of situations involving armed confrontation.

A local instructor conducts a training seminar on simple and effective ways to effect release and escape from an attacker and methods of disabling an attacker. This is a hands-on class and the students apply the techniques being sought. (Wear comfortable clothing.)
TELECOMMUNICATIONS & NARCOTICS

A representative from the Communications Division explains radio procedures and the role of the telecommunications operator in providing Police, Fire and EMS service. Students will be provided a tour of the Emergency Communications Center. Narcotic laws, identifying and reporting suspected narcotic trafficking activity and identification of various substances is presented. A display of narcotics and paraphernalia is used.
TRAFFIC LAW & D.W.I. INVESTIGATIONS

Former traffic officer, Sgt. Rudy Ramirez, will present traffic law and procedures with emphasis on the most common traffic offenses, DWI and collision investigation. Students receive specialized instruction concerning the mechanic of violator contact and officer safety.
SATURDAY PRACTICAL: BUILDING SEARCHES / TRAFFIC STOPS

The class is split into two groups for this session. One group receives practical instruction concerning family violence and other types of confrontational situations. Students encounter citizens in a variety of potentially dangerous situations. The second group conducts simulated traffic stops and violator contacts. Students operate a fully equipped patrol vehicle under the supervision of a police instructor. Several scenarios are used. **Class will meet at Schlumberger facility.
FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION

Agent David Baker of the FBI will provide an overview of the FBI along with an explanation of the agencies responsibilities within the American justice system.
CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS

Students are provided a general knowledge of laws and penalties in Texas. Definitions for felony, misdemeanor offenses and elements necessary for offenses are stressed. Assault offenses, burglary, robbery and thefts are stressed.
FORT BEND COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY

The District Attorney for Fort Bend County will explain the role of the Prosecutor in preparing a criminal case for trial. In addition, he will explain all facets of a criminal prosecution and the jury system.
IDENTIFICATION - PROPERTY

A crime scene officer instructs about identification, collection, and preservation of crime scene evidence. Latent print development, wounds, blood splatter patterns, DNA matching and other scientific evidence procedure are discussed and demonstrated. Chain of custody and storage of evidence is also included. A tour of the identification lab is offered.
SATURDAY PRACTICAL: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION

Students will be given the opportunity to conduct an investigation of simulated crime scene. Methods of sketching and reporting scene information, evidence identification, collection and chain of custody of evidence will be demonstrated. Students will conduct crime scene investigation, interviews and scene security in an attempt to “solve” the crime. **Class will meet at Sugar Land PD facility.

The Sugar Land Citizens Police Academy Alumni will introduce their organization. Instructions by Chief Denton on the Community Assistance Support Team (CAST). Students will be able to participate in the Beat Accountability meeting that has been created as a way to discuss the cities current issues in each officers beat.
This will be a Wednesday evening class.
TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE

The class will tour the TDCJ Central Prison Unit located near the Sugar Land Airport. Students will be provided the opportunity to tour all areas and learn about how the Texas prison system works. **Class will meet at TDCJ – Central Prison.
