Criminal Investigation
The Criminal Investigation Division investigates all crimes in Sugar Land that are not observed by a patrol officer. The Sugar Land Police Department Criminal Investigations Division or CID, is charged with the investigation of reported criminal acts that occur inside the City of Sugar Land.
The division is capable of investigating any criminal act and has the ability to work with any other local police department or federal law enforcement agency. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has offices within the Criminal Investigations Division.
Detectives are involved in four types of investigations: crimes against persons, crimes against property, juvenile crimes and narcotic violations.
The persons unit handles any investigative needs regarding crimes against persons, such as robbery and assault. The property unit investigates burglaries, thefts and fraud cases. Detectives assigned to the juvenile unit handle cases involving juvenile suspects. Narcotics Officers work closely with the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force Units and handle investigations involving illicit drugs. The Criminal Investigations Division uses the Internet and other line date bands to assist them in their investigations.
Once an investigation is completed, detectives file the results of the investigation with the Fort Bend County District Attorney's Office for charges and dispositions. However, not all investigations that are completed result in charges being filed.
Detectives can clear cases as "suspended," "inactive" or "unfounded" to note a few. "Suspended" means the investigation has stopped on this case since all investigative leads have been exhausted and there is not enough evidence to file a case. "Inactive" means the case was assigned to a detective but there were no leads for the officer to follow up. "Unfounded" would indicate the incident reported was determined, after the investigation, as not involving a violation of the law.
