In addition to the daily tasks of checking property in and out, the Division handles the transportation of evidence to different crime laboratories across the state of Texas, the preparation of evidence for court exhibits, assisting the Criminal Investigations Division in cold case research and supporting the Crime Scene Unit when necessary.

During 2006, the Property & Evidence Division received 10,873 units of property and/or evidence, released 2766 items back to the owner and destroyed 24,541 items including unclaimed property, narcotics paraphernalia and evidence that was no longer needed for investigation purposes.
