2009 CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING

Just a few hours before a fall of winter snow gave Sugar Land a very rare and special `white Christmas', over 10,000 residents, friends and neighbors joined Mayor Thompson and Santa Claus for the lighting of the City’s 40-foot Christmas tree in front of City Hall.

While waiting for Santa to make his grand entrance, juggling elves and a life-sized snow man mingled with the crowd providing holiday mirth and merriment. Children also took part in activities offered by local retailers and community groups which included face painting, mini-manicures and hair glitter, bean bag tosses and of course, the very popular free holiday photo with Santa.

Throughout the evening, the main stage entertainment highlighted the great talent that abounds in Sugar Land, especially in our schools. Several local school groups from the Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD)participated in the program as a tribute to the district's 50th Anniversary.

Of course, the FBISD staff and students weren't the only ones celebrating 50 wonderful years, with the City also celebrating its 50th Anniversary. The occassion was marked by a nostalgic grand entrance of Santa in a 1950's delivery truck, kindly sponsored by Minute Maid.

On arrival, Santa waved to the children who were all very excited to see him, before joining the Mayor on stage and lighting the Christmas tree to a hearty countdown provided by the gathered crowd. As the lights on the tree sparkled, the chill of the evening gave way to the warmth of Christmas joy and wonder.
