2009 MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY
On Monday May 25th 2009 the City’s first Memorial Day Ceremony was held at Sugar Land Memorial Park, with over 1,500 people in attendance. This event was held in association with Fort Bend Salutes America to pay tribute to the men and women of the armed services who have served our country with bravery and honor.
The official ceremony began with the Presentation of Colors and the singing of the National Anthem, which concluded with a flyover by a US Coast Guard helicopter. The ceremony also included benedictions from various religious leaders, a wreath laying ceremony, a 21 gun-salute, and school children presenting their own Messages of Freedom. The main tribute address was delivered by Congressman Pete Olson.
Throughout the ceremony, a US flag made of silk flowers hung next to the stage. At the conclusion of the ceremony people were able to take one of the silk flowers home with them as a lasting memory.
Before and after the ceremony, people had the opportunity to look at displays of military vehicles and artifacts. People were also able to express their gratitude to a veteran or current soldier, by writing personal messages on commemorative post cards from the ceremony.
Information was also on hand about the permanent memorial features planned for the park which will further recognize Veterans.
