2010 Sugar Land Memorial Day Ceremony
The City of Sugar Land paid tribute to those who have shown bravery and honor while serving the country during its 2nd annual Memorial Day Ceremony in Sugar Land Memorial Park on Monday, May 31st.
During the ceremony, the Kit Reid U.S. Brass Band brought to life old memories for military soldiers by playing a variety of patriotic music, local Boy Scout Troops 731 and 992 honored our flags by providing both wreath and flag ceremonies, and Sugar Land senior and Navy veteran, Dennis Kreig, read the roll call list of Sugar Land’s fallen soldiers.
Other patriotic performances and tributes included heartfelt essays from local schools and a tribute to the Gamble family in honor of their son and brother, Marine Lance Cpl. Garrett W. Gamble, who died on March 11 in Afghanistan. Mayor Thompson presented the family with the first Marine flag flown in Sugar Land Memorial Park.
Activities throughout the park included the General Patton exhibit, the Houston Marine Mom’s donation and care package station which collected several supply donations and a total of $1,746.00 in monetary donations, the Texas State Guard flower booth, and the Wall That Heals, a half scale replica of Maya Lin’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Throughout the weekend, residents and families from the surrounding communities visited the Wall that Heals and learned many stories of fallen Vietnam soldiers and also researched several names of loved ones lost during the Vietnam War. During its five day visit, over 12,000 visitors experienced the Vietnam Veteran Memorial Fund and over $4,000 were collected in monetary donations. The City of Sugar Land is honored to host such an impacting event and is eager to plan its 3rd annual Memorial Day Ceremony.
