2010 Cultural Kite Festival

Over 6,000 residents came out to show support for the City’s inaugural Cultural Kite Festival held February 6, 2010 at the Sugar Land Memorial Park.   Beautiful cultural and recreational kites of all shapes and sizes adorned the sky throughout the five hour event. Many participants were excited to be able to fly a kite for the very first time!

The day started with an opening ceremony including a large 5-foot customized City of Sugar Land Cultural Kite flown by Mayor James Thompson and several Council Members. Activities included face painting, free kite lessons and a kite making workshop.  Marvelous performances were given by various cultural groups along with kid’s entertainment throughout the day as well.

The SHARK Kite Club also offered a variety of kite flying activities and a display of large kites such as caterpillars and huge clown fish for kids to enjoy. Various local restaurants provided delicious culturally diverse food and refreshments.  And of course, there was plenty of space for recreational kite flying and those who simply preferred to stroll around and take pleasure of the magnificent view in the sky.
