Event Information

“It’s a bird!  It’s a plane!”  Well actually, it could be both at the City’s 3rd annual Cultural Kite Festival held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at Sugar Land Memorial Park.  Everyone is invited to enjoy the festival once again to participate in many activities such as a miniature kite museum showcasing the diversified history of kite making, kite flying lessons and various cultural performances.  Kite flying is a popular activity and sport in many countries around the world, and it has proved to be a major hit in Sugar Land as our City represents a mixture of cultures and diversity.

Activities and Entertainment

Attendees will also have the opportunity to enter kite flying competitions and win a variety of wonderful prizes.  Don’t have a kite?  Don’t worry!  A kite-making workshop will be onsite for children to build, design and take home their own kites as memorabilia.  There will be plenty of space for free flying kite lovers or those who prefer to stroll around and just enjoy the magnificent view and entertainment. 


Other entertainment includes walk-around characters such as Ben Franklin, who will provide stories on the history of kite flying and its connection to the discovery of electricity.  Cirque style performers and stilt walkers will also roam the meadow enticing the crowd with their visual artistry and movement. Face painting and henna tattoos will also be available for children who want to partake in the festivities.


The main stage will come to life with cultural performances from local area groups The DJ will host children’s activities during intermissions, allowing kids to learn a cultural dance from a professional or engage with other kids in carnival-themed games.

 

Kite Contest

The Kite Contest is open to all ages, shapes and sizes! Anyone who wants to compete is encouraged to participate. There is no cost to enter. Registration will be located at the blue City of Sugar Land Tent at the times listed below per category. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies will be awarded for each category.

Cultural food and beverages will be sold by local onsite food vendors.

  

Parking 

Parking will be available at the Sugar Land Memorial Park and also at the University of Houston Sugar Land Campus also located on University Blvd. Free shuttle services will provide transportation form the campus to the park.  Please look for signs for Shuttle Bus pickup spots.
