Memorial Tree, Bench & Paver Program
Memorial Donations
The City of Sugar Land Parks and Recreation Department offers a Memorial Tree, Bench and Paver Program for those who wish to contribute to the beauty of the parks by purchasing a tree to be planted or a bench to be installed in someone's honor or memory.

Memorial Tree DonationMemorial Trees
A memorial tree is a long-lasting opportunity to honor or remember a loved one. At the same time, it improves the beauty and quality of the City of Sugar Land's parks.

Memorial Tree The Parks and Recreation Department has chosen Live Oaks and Cedar Elms to be included in the memorial program. These trees are durable and drought tolerant. A 30 gallon tree is standard but larger trees may be installed at a higher cost.

Planting
Trees will be planted between November 1 and March 1. You may select a specific park for your tree donation from the list on the application. The tree's exact location will be determined by city staff. Memorial trees will be planted adjacent to trails or near parking lots within a chosen park. Donors will be notified once a tree has been planted, and will be made aware of its location. The city can not guarantee a specific planting date.

Donors are not permitted to add additional plantings, flowers or decorations to the memorial's area. You may choose a memorial tree with or without an accompanying bronze marker.

Cost
The cost for a memorial tree with an accompanying memorial bronze marker is approximately $540. This includes:
  • Supply and planting of the 30 gallon tree
  • A cast bronze 4 inch by 8 inch plaque at the foot of the tree, surrounded by concrete for stability

The cost for a memorial tree without an accompanying marker is approximately $325. This includes:
  • Supply and planting of the tree

Memorial Bench DonationMemorial Bench
Memorial benches provide another option to honor or remember a loved one, as well as offer respite to park visitors to help them enjoy their surroundings. Benches may be installed at any time, weather permitting. Donors will be notified once the bench and marker have been installed, and will be made aware of its location. The city cannot guarantee a specific installation date. All benches will be installed adjacent to trails or near parking lots within a chosen park.

Donors are not permitted to add additional plantings, flowers or decorations to the memorial's areas.

Costs
The cost for a memorial bench is $650. This includes:
  • Installation of a 6 foot recycled plastic bench with back
  • Engraved plaque insert in the back of the bench

Plaques
The bronze plaque accompanying memorial trees is a 4 inch by 8 inch plaque surrounded by a concrete frame. For memorial benches, it will be installed in the middle slat of the bench.

Inscriptions
Memorial inscriptions are limited to for whom the tree or bench is in honor / memory, and the dates of birth and death or dedication. Additional inscriptions, religious symbols, and extraneous content is not permitted.

Inscriptions will appear in the following format:
In memory of / In loving memory of / In honor of
Bob Smith
June 5, 1942 - January 7, 2010

Please note, the city will not replace or be responsible for plaques or benches that may become damaged or stolen, or for trees that become damaged or die. Prices shown are approximate. Actual prices may vary slightly. For more information about the City of Sugar Land Memorial Tree and Bench Program, call 281-275-2825.

Pawm Springs Dog Park

The city recognizes the desire for additional shade in the dog park and would like to give users the opportunity to donate a tree on behalf of your dog. This program follows the same guidelines as the memorial tree program except that in lieu of a bronze plaque at the base of each tree, a centralized board with name plates is located at the pavilion. This is done to eliminate obstructions for the dogs as they run around the park.

The cost for a memorial tree in the dog park is approximately $320. This includes:
  • Supply and planting of the tree
  • Engraved plaque on central recognition board

Dog Park Bench Donation
The city welcomes the donation of additional benches in the dog park and gives owners an opportunity to recognize their canine friends. This program operates in the same manner as the Memorial Bench Donation listed previously and is the same price.
Plaques

The plaque accompanying memorial trees is a 1 inch by 3.25 inches engraved plaque mounted on a central recognition board at the pavilion. Plaques are installed in the order received. For memorial benches, it will be installed in the middle slat of the bench.

Memorial inscriptions are limited to the name of the dog that the tree or bench is "in honor" or "in memory of", and the name of the donating person, organization, or family. Multiple dogs may be permitted on the plaque as long as they can fit on the same line with no adjustment to font size. Additional inscriptions, religious symbols, and extraneous content is not permitted.

Inscriptions will appear in the following format:
  • In memory of / In honor of
    Rex
Friend / Member of the Smith Family
