General Information
- Whenever you need to report a crime, need police assistance, or need fire or immediate medical assistance, you should call 9-1-1.
- Don’t use 9-1-1 to ask about community events, directions, or information. Also don’t use 9-1-1 to report power or cable outages, unless downed wires present a hazard.
- What type of problem
- Location – the address, major cross street, landmarks, etc.
- Your phone number
- Your name
- Hang up last. The emergency operator may need additional information and emergency units can be dispatched and on the way while you are still on the phone.
- Keep your address and phone number posted near each phone so that the information is available in an emergency – especially helpful for babysitters.
- Cellular phone calls to 9-1-1 are routed to a 9-1-1 answering point based on cell radio coverage. Cell site coverage areas do not always match city or county boundaries, and may need to be transferred to the appropriate agency. It is extremely important for the cellular phone user to be able to describe his or her location.
