Residential Fire Sprinkler Systems
Consider installing a fire sprinkler system in your new home or retrofitting an existing home. Why? Residential fire sprinklers save lives and property by controlling or extinguishing fires in their early stages. This translates to less damage from fire, smoke, and water. Additionally, a fire sprinkler system could save you money on insurance.
Myth #1: Sprinklers go off easily. No. Sprinklers are set to open when an element inside the sprinkler reaches a specified temperature. Loss records reveal that only 1 in 16,000,000 sprinklers per year will open accidentally.
Myth #2: Sprinklers cause extensive water damage. No. Most sprinkler heads deliver no more that 15 – 25 gallons per minute in a fine spray covering areas between 144 and 400 square feet. Compare this to over 100 gallons per minute from a typical fire hose.
Myth #3: When a fire starts, all the sprinklers go off. No. In the majority of sprinkler systems, only one sprinkler head activates at a time. One sprinkler head does not trigger others. Having a residential sprinkler system is better than having a fire engine and crew stationed on every corner, 24 hours a day. Even such a crew cannot get water on a fire sooner than a sprinkler system. Sprinklers use vastly less water than firefighters. Almost everything will dry. Except for ice, almost nothing “un-melts.” For more information call the Public Education Program at (281) 275-2859 orE-Mail the Sugar Land Fire Department.
