About the System
Sugar Land has acquired a state-of-the-art emergency notification system to quickly communicate with citizens by residential, business or cell phone as well as e-mail, text message or devices for the hearing and speech impaired. The system allows citizens to register unlisted numbers for emergency contact through the city's Web site - www.sugarlandtx.gov.
The City contracted Connect-CTY for a fully hosted emergency notification system.
“No longer is the home telephone the most effective way to reach a highly mobile society, so it's important that we keep up with the changing needs of our community,” said City Manager Allen Bogard. “We intend to utilize Connect CTY to provide time-sensitive instructions during crisis situations that could include hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding and other man-made emergencies.”
Built for cities, towns and counties, the Connect-CTY service allows local government to reach thousands with one phone call. The service is a web-based solution that allows authorized staff members to send messages via the public telephone networks, as well as by text and e-mail. And, if no computer or Internet connection is available, emergency calls can be made using any telephone to access the Connect-CTY service.
Connect CTY
Connect CTY is a product of Blackboard Connect Inc., which has telecommunications contracts in place with Service Level Agreements to initiate at least 1.2 million 60-second voice messages per hour. NTI utilizes less than 2 percent of its overall capacity on a daily basis, ensuring that calls are delivered in a matter of minutes.
The system has been used successfully by other cities for missing children/lost adults, detours/road closures, storm warnings, evacuation plans, chemical spills, escaped convicts, health warnings, water contamination, temporary water cut-off and more.
Primary residential and business phones in Sugar Land will be automatically included in the system. The City is also collecting e-mail addresses, cell phone and unlisted landline numbers to be included in the Connect-CTY communication service.
