Mixed Use Conservation District
The City is moving forward with plans to study the Mixed Use Conservation District encompassing the neighborhood along Brooks Street. In order to improve the district, the City is considering the option to replace the Conditional Use Permit process with objective standards that can be administered at the staff level. As the process proceeds, public opinion and input are key elements in creating standards for development in the MUC District.
On April 10th and 13th, the City of Sugar Land held two public input meetings regarding possible changes to the district. At these two meetings, citizen input centered around several key points:
- Additional commercial uses (reinstating those that had been listed between 1997 and 1999)
- The pros and cons of tearing down structures
- Preservation of front facades
- The need to change approval process
- Whether to extend or reduce the boundaries of the district
- If additional commercial uses and an improved approval process are successful, we could encourage increased investment and private rehabilitation
- The variety of structures in the district makes it difficult to determine "pattern"
We will continue to seek the opinions and suggestions offered by stakeholders as we draft options for development and conservation of this unique area of our community. The City is committed to answering any questions residents may have and understands the sense of urgency that is felt in the community.
