The City of Sugar Land Planning Department consists of two key parts:
- Development Planning
- Long Range Planning
Development Planning, also known as "Current Planning" has responsibilities that include land-use implementation, zoning regulation, subdivision regulation and enhancing the development process through effective utilization of ordinances related to current and future land-use issues. Development Planning oversees the review of general plans, plats and site plan packages for development projects within both the corporate limits and the City of Sugar Land's Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ). In addition, rezoning proposals, conditional use permits and zoning variances are reviewed, coordinated by the staff, and processed through to the Planning and Zoning Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustment, and City Council as required. The staff reviews cases for ordinance compliance and communicates all technical requirements of the City's ordinances to developers and residents. Staff will be glad to answer questions regarding development processes. Please contact Douglas Schomburg, AICP, Assistant Planning Director or Gretchen Pyle, Development Review Coordinator for additional information.
Long Range Planning, is responsible for the maintenance and update of the City of Sugar Land Comprehensive Plan, which is a document that will guide our City's growth. This duty involves collecting and projecting base data, such as demographics, geographic information and a land use inventory. The implementation of the adopted Plan involves a variety of special projects, such as code amendments and public improvement projects. Our team is responsible for ensuring that development and redevelopment complies with all applicable City Master Plans. Please contact Sabine Somers-Kuenzel, AICP, Director of Planning for additional information.
