Cell Phone Recycling
Americans discard more than 130 million used cell phones a year. That’s four cell phones per second! All of this adds up to 65,000 tons of potentially toxic waste generated annually. The phones’ disposal in Texas landfills or incinerators can have a widespread impact on public health and the environment. The toxic material from a single phone is capable of polluting 158,200 gallons of water!
Fortunately, responsible local retailers, along with Keep Sugar Land Beautiful, an affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful, are participating in an innovative new recycling program that addresses this growing concern. Simply drop off your used cell phone(s) at the following participating retailers:
Kroger, Sweetwater
4825 Sweetwater Blvd
Sugar Land, TX 77479
Starbucks, Town Center
2545 Town Center Blvd
Sugar Land, TX 77478
*Located in Barnes & Noble
Proceeds will benefit the Planet Earth Carts, a mobile environmental education resource tool, that KSLB will donate to local elementary schools. The Carts will be stocked with fiction and non fiction books, games, videos, and resource materials to be utilized by all teachers and students in grades K-5 at each school.
Keep Sugar Land Beautiful is launching the program in cooperation with EcoPhones, a Texas based cell phone recycler.
