Police Chief Steve Griffith

Police Chief Steve Griffith is a Houston area native and 27-year law enforcement veteran. Prior to Sugar Land, Griffith was instrumental in the design, and was executive director, of the ALERRT Center (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training) at Texas State University in San Marcos. Among his prior positions, Griffith was police chief in the cities of West University Place and San Marcos, and he also served with the Bellaire Police Department and the University of Houston Central Campus Police.

Griffith was police chief for the City of West University from 1987 to 1998 and spent eight years with the Bellaire Police Department, where he served in the positions of captain, lieutenant, patrol sergeant and senior patrol officer. From 1976 until 1979, he was employed by the University of Houston as a patrol officer.

Griffith earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Houston and a master's degree in criminal justice management from Sam Houston State University. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the public executive institute at the University of Texas Lyndon Baines Johnson School of Public Affairs. Griffith holds a master peace officer and instructor certificate and serves as an adjunct criminal justice instructor at Texas State University.

He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Texas Police Chief's Association, and the Hays County Law Enforcement Association.

Griffith has been actively involved in the San Marcos community. He is the past chairman of the board of directors for the Texas Special Olympics, serving as co-chairman of the summer games. He serves on the board of directors for the Hays County United Way and is the president of the San Marcos Rotary Club. He is also an active member of the San Marcos Sunrise Club.

He and his wife, Wendy, have two sons. The Chief of Police is responsible for operations within all bureaus of the police department; the operations bureau, investigations bureau, staff services bureau, and support services bureau. The Assistant Chiefs of Police assist the chief of police in all departmental functions.
