Recognize the recent community forestry award given to Keep Sugar Land Beautiful for the Trees Across Sugar Land Program.

Executive Summary

Keep Sugar Land Beautiful, in partnership with the City of Sugar Land, recently received the 2009 Gold Leaf Landscape Beautification Award for a commitment to community forestry through the “Trees Across Sugar Land” program.

The Gold Leaf Landscape Beautification Award is designed to recognize individuals, organizations, or municipalities that have made significant contributions through tree planting and landscaping which enhance environmental protection, conservation, beautification, energy conservation, or wildlife protection and that show an impact over several years.

The “Trees Across Sugar Land” program began in 2007. For three years, volunteers of all ages have been invited out to Sugar Land Memorial Park to plant thousands of seedlings that contribute to the City’s reforestation efforts in the park. This year, trees donated by the Apache Foundation and Minute Maid were planted by over seven hundred volunteers.

In addition, on October 24th in Oyster Creek and Lost Creek Parks, 230 5-gallon live oak trees were planted along the banks of Oyster Creek by over two hundred volunteers. The trees were donated to Keep Sugar Land Beautiful through the Replant Texas grant - a partnership between Keep Texas Beautiful and Half Price Books established to replace trees destroyed by Hurricane Ike.

The City plans to partner with Keep Sugar Land Beautiful on future “Trees Across Sugar Land” projects with the next event occurring on January 30, 2010 at Sugar Land Memorial Park.
