Review and discuss plans for 50th Anniversary Celebration.

Executive Summary

As the City’s 50th Anniversary year comes to an end, plans are developing for a celebration to be held in conjunction with New Year’s Eve from 5 p.m. December 31, 2009 to 1 a.m. January 1, 2010 at Sugar Land Town Square.

The primary goals of the event are: to celebrate Sugar Land’s rich past and to create a unique event that paves the way for future years.  It is anticipated that the 50th Anniversary celebration will also be economically beneficial to the retailers and hotels in the surrounding area, attracting approximately 10,000 to 15,000 people of all ages.

Entertainment for the evening includes an upscale production to set a vibrant atmosphere, first class performers from across the nation, a live band and DJ combination and much more.

The proposal for the celebration includes a Midnight Sugar Cube drop as part of the grand finale, symbolizing a wish for a sweet new year.  Like major cities across the nation, Sugar Land will ring in the New Year with a unique display of fireworks shot from within Town Square.

The purpose of the workshop is to show the City Council the plans and entertainment for the event to be held on New Year’s Eve.
