Executive Summary |
||||
|
The Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) have completed final grant selection for FY10 Solid Waste Implementation Grants, and the City of Sugar Land’s grant proposal for the development of a recycling awareness program was selected to receive $13,459. With this H-GAC grant,
the City is partnering with Keep Sugar Land Beautiful (KSLB) to implement a recycling awareness campaign
to include school assembly performances
by Steve Trash and the distribution of activity books and pencils to
students. With this H-GAC grant, the City, in partnership with Keep Sugar Land Beautiful (KSLB), will present the “Trash Recycle & Litter Show” to all fourth and fifth grade classes (approximately 3,000 students and 120 teachers) in Sugar Land, including Fort Bend ISD and private schools. The nationally recognized Steve Trash, the “Rockin’ Eco Hero”, teaches students how to reduce, reuse, and recycle through comedy and magic. The students will learn how much trash we generate, why recycling is a good idea and how to prevent litter. Each school will receive a “Trash Recycle & Litter” video and a curriculum with lesson plans along with pencils and activity books for all of the students. This grant process is very competitive and Sugar Land has been consistently successful over the years in obtaining grants that have paid for numerous educational programs and projects including construction of both of the City’s recycling centers. The Public Works Department recommends that the City Council accept the H-GAC grant and approve a revenue and expenditure adjustment in the amount of $13,459. |
