Executive Summary

In observance of Fire Prevention Week (FPW), October 4-10, 2009, the Sugar Land Fire Department will be visiting third grade classes throughout the month of October to educate them with a FPW presentation. The theme for this year’s FPW is “Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned.”  Firefighters will also be visiting area daycares and preschools.

Also, the third annual Sugar Land Fire Department Open House will be held Saturday, October 10th from 10am-2pm at the Sugar Land Community Center.  It serves as an opportunity for citizens to meet their firefighters, talk to the fire department’s leaders, and get a look at the equipment used to keep the City safe, as well as tour our brand new Fire Station #1.

I, James A. Thompson, Mayor of the City of Sugar Land, hereby proclaim the week of October 4-10, 2009, as Fire Prevention Week. This week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which killed more than 250 persons, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 buildings, and serves as the motivating force to bring the people of Sugar Land together to build a safer community.

I REQUEST THAT the CITIZENS of Sugar Land participate to “Stay Fire Smart! Don’t Get Burned.” Commemorate Fire prevention week by joining in prevention activities at home, work, and school. Therefore, By taking these steps you will make your homes and families safe from fire.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have set my hand and seal of the City of Sugar Land on this 6th  Day of October, the year two thousand and nine.
