Discussion on SLtv 16 enhancements and recommended elimination of the administrative fee for use of the Community Bulletin Board. |
Executive Summary |
Last year, City Council directed staff to amend the City’s government access channel policy to allow governmental agencies and property associations to publicize meeting and event notices on the SLtv16 Bulletin Board along with an assessed fee of $25 per notice. At the December 3, 2009 City Council meeting, a resolution and fee ordinance were approved allowing the City to accept text slides containing notices of meetings and events of governmental entities and property associations located within Sugar Land for broadcast on the municipal channel’s bulletin board. At the January 19, 2010 City Council meeting, a resolution was approved allowing the City to accept text slides from non-profit organizations for broadcast on the municipal channel’s bulletin board. Staff was asked to report back on the status of the community bulletin board. The community bulletin board has been publicized in Sugar Land Today, local media, SLtv 16, the City’s website and during public meetings. Participation in the community bulletin board has been minimal. City staff recommends eliminating the $25 fee to encourage greater use. In addition, SLtv 16 content enhancements are being planned to encourage more citizens to watch the channel. SLtv16 is the City’s cable television channel, available to Comcast subscribers living within the corporate City limits of Sugar Land. Approximately 11,500 homes have access to the channel, which is also streamed live on the City’s Web site at www.sugarlandtx.gov. |
