Summary |
||||
|
The City of Sugar
Land is a participant in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). As a participant, the City’s residents are eligible
to purchase flood insurance policies from FEMA. Also, as a participant, the City is
required to adopt and enforce certain minimum criteria aimed at reducing
flood damage in our community. Through
the Community Rating System (CRS) program, FEMA acknowledges communities that
have adopted floodplain management programs that exceed the minimum NFIP
requirements and designates those communities as “CRS”. The City in recent
years has implemented floodplain management programs that exceed the minimum
NFIP requirements. Examples include
the City’s flood alert system and the adoption of the No Adverse Impact
Floodplain Management Policy along with other internal review policies and
procedures for development plan review.
As a result of these programs, the City is now eligible to join the
CRS Program. The City submitted an
application to join the CRS Program in 2008.
Following that request, FEMA staff/consultant performed an extensive
audit of the City’s floodplain administration program as well as measures
implemented to reduce flood loss within the community. Engineering staff
were notified of the City’s acceptance in the CRS program in May 2010. Upon joining the CRS Program, the City will
be re-classified as a Class 7 community from its present rating as a Class 10
community on the CRS scale. This will
enable City residents to receive a premium reduction on flood insurance
policies that are in effect, in addition to improving the City’s standing
with FEMA for measures being undertaken to reduce damage losses within the
community. FEMA estimates that
currently there are about 4,300 flood insurance policies in force in the
City. |
