Recognize Serve Sugar Land Volunteers.

Executive Summary

Serve Sugar Land began in 2007 as a means for the citizens of Sugar Land and surrounding neighborhoods to become involved in their city government through volunteerism. In 2009, over 615 volunteers contributed over 18,676 hours of service to the city equaling over $389,395.00 in in-kind service donations. Volunteers assisted at the Police and Fire Department, Animal Shelter, Senior Center, Municipal Court and in City Hall Departments.

The City hosted a Volunteer Appreciation event on April 25, 2010 at Oyster Creek Park to recognize and thank all volunteers that have participated in the program.  Special recognition went to 13 individuals, as listed in the table below, who were nominated by City Department’s as Departmental Volunteer of the Year.  From these 13 nominees, 2 individuals, Bruce Kelly and Deborah Smith, were selected as the 2009 City of Sugar Land Volunteer of the Year.

Deborah Smith has been served as a volunteer since 2006.   Deb has been an integral part of the initial development of CAST to the current scheduling and extensive reporting that is required of the program. Deb coordinates all activities related to CAST. Her recent involvement with the Impact Team addressing Burglary of Motor Vehicles included contacting citizens and providing information to help reduce becoming a victim of crime. She continues to serve as a liaison to other cities and communities looking to replicate the success of the Sugar Land CAST program.

Bruce Kelly was instrumental in several facets of the City’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.  Bruce’s contributions included developing and conducting monthly walking historical tours, developing and presenting a power point presentation for community groups, and consulting and working with the artist to ensure Sugar Land’s history was appropriately displayed on the commemorative statue. Bruce’s passion and love for the City, paired with the opportunity to share its history with the rest of the community, fueled his volunteer efforts.   In addition, Bruce currently serves as a Board Member on the Sugar Land Heritage Society.

With the help of these and hundreds of additional volunteers, the City is able to further expand the services it offers its citizens.
