Proclaim April 20, 2010 as Arbor Day in the City of Sugar Land

Executive Summary

The City of Sugar Land and Keep Sugar Land Beautiful (KSLB) are supporting Arbor Day by proclaiming April 20, 2010 as Arbor Day in Sugar Land. Arbor Day began in 1872 when J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees.  This holiday was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska.  Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world.

As part of Sugar Land’s Arbor Day celebration, the Parks and Recreation Department is working with KSLB and the Mayors Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) to educate the public about tree care and to hand out tree seedlings at the “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rock” event at Town Center Plaza on April 23rd.

In January, the City and Keep Sugar Land Beautiful held the fourth-annual “Trees Across Sugar Land” event and planted 10,000 seedlings with nearly 600 volunteers in Sugar Land Memorial Park. This ongoing reforestation effort was supported by the generous donations of the Apache Foundation, Telfair Life, Native Land Design, and Huitt-Zollars.

On January 27th,  KSLB received an Arbor Day Award from Trees for Houston for the “Trees Across Sugar Land” program in recognition of the more than 45,000 trees that have been planted in our community.
