Review and discuss department’s short term goals and the proposed update to the economic development plan and process.
Executive Summary
The Economic Development Department has recently undergone a restructuring to better address the challenges and business development needs of the City. In addition to the internal reorganization, key short term goals and necessary resources have been identified to maintain an aggressive program that repositions to the City to deal with external economic issues impacting the City’s revenue sources. Staff will review the short term goals and the programs that will meet these needs. Furthermore, the City’s Economic Development Plan is the document that provides the strategic direction for the City’s involvement in economic development activities and its long range goals. The existing Economic Development Plan for the City of Sugar land was approved in 2000. As a result of the implementation of that plan the City’s economic development efforts have been extremely successful and the City has received local, state and national recognition. To ensure the City continues to build and maintain itself as a premier destination to live, shop, work and play, a strategic project was identified for this budget year to update the City’s economic development plan. . Staff will provide an overview of the progress in meeting the original objectives in the plan and a proposed process and policy elements to be addressed in the update to the Economic Development Plan for the SLDC Board review.
