Recommended Action

Consideration and action by City Council on Resolution 08-53 establishing benefits and compensation for council members.

Executive Summary

Resolution #08-53 repeals Resolution #07-47 and will allow individual Council Members to enroll in the City’s health and dental insurance benefit plan at a cost equivalent to the employee contribution for the same plan; previously, council members could enroll but were required to pay the full cost without any City contribution.

The proposed resolution reflects the change in the health and dental insurance benefit plan but maintains both the current compensation levels for the Mayor and individual City Council members and the monthly car allowance.

RESOLUTION NO.  08-53

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SUGAR LAND, TEXAS, ESTABLISHING BENEFITS AND COMPENSATION FOR COUNCIL MEMBERS.

WHEREAS, Section 2.04 of the City Charter authorizes the city council to provide for the payment of compensation and expenses for the mayor and council members; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL

OF THE CITY OF SUGAR LAND, TEXAS:

Section 1. That the City will pay the mayor compensation of $1200 per month during the mayor’s term of office and will pay each other council member compensation of $600 per month during their terms of office.

Section 2. That the City will pay each council member a car allowance of $550 per month during his or her term of office.  In addition, a council member who uses a vehicle for a trip of more than 100 miles one way may request mileage reimbursement from the City for the entire trip by submitting the applicable City form.  Reimbursement will be at the current rate applicable to the charitable use of an automobile as set by the Internal Revenue Service, which provides for reimbursement of average fuel costs.

Section 3. That each council member may participate in the City’s health and dental insurance benefit plan by enrolling in the plan and paying an amount equivalent to the employee contribution for the same plan.

Section 4. That Resolution 07-47 is repealed.
