Present proclamations to Jacqui Smith and Bridget Stephney, Special Olympians.

Whereas,        Special Olympics is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition; and

Whereas,        7,500 athletes competed in the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai, People’s Republic of China on October 2-11, 2007; and

Whereas,        athletes of all abilities competed in 21 competitive events, including bowling, outdoor bowls, sailboat, golf, weightlifting, basketball, equitation, volleyball, table tennis, handball, aquatic sports, gymnastics, track and field, tennis, badminton, cycling, canoeing, judo, ice skating, soccer and baseball;

Whereas,        to achieve excellence in a sport, a person must possess an outstanding spirit of dedication, enthusiasm, and willingness to work hard; and

Bridget Stephney

Whereas,        a vivid example of this has been established by Bridget Stephney, who was named 2007 Female of the Year participating in volleyball, basketball, track and field, swimming, and softball;

Jacqui Smith

Whereas,        a vivid example of this has been established by Jacqui Smith, who won 5th place in Shot Put, 5th place in 100m Relay and 7th place in 100m Dash;

Now, Therefore, I, David Wallace, on behalf of the members of City Council, and by the virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Sugar Land, Texas, do hereby congratulate (Bridget Stephney) (Jacqui Smith) and extend this expression of our pride for your success and dedication.
