Approve Resolution No. 07-38 in support of Fort Bend Independent School District Bond Referendum to be held on November 6, 2007

Executive Summary

On October 16, 2007, Dr. Timothy Jenney, Fort Bend Independent School District Superintendent, presented City Council an overview of the District’s proposed $428 million bond referendum to be held on November 6, 2007.  Per Council’s direction, attached is a City resolution of support of the Board of Trustees decision to hold the 2007 bond referendum for planned capital improvements.

RESOLUTION NO. 07-38

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SUGAR LAND, TEXAS, SUPPORTING THE FORT BEND INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT ELECTION ON NOVEMBER 6, 2007 FOR THE ISSUANCE OF $428 MILLION IN BONDS TO PROVIDE FOR CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS.

 

            WHEREAS, Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) currently serves approximately 69,000 students, and enrollment is projected to grow to 75,000 over the next three years, and to grow to 88,000 by 2015; and   

 

            WHEREAS, the City of Sugar Land is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States and consistently ranks as one of the best places to live in the country; and

           

            WHEREAS, past performance by the FBISD has embraced a philosophy that has led to high achievements by the students enrolled in its school system; and

           

            WHEREAS, a Bond Steering Committee comprised of community members and FBISD staff have performed an extensive review and evaluation of capital needs of FBISD and recommended that the FBISD Board of Trustees called for a $428 million bond election; and

 

            WHEREAS, the FBISD Board of Trustees has unanimously voted to call for a $428 million bond referendum to be held November 6, 2007; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL

OF THE CITY OF SUGAR LAND, TEXAS:

 

            Section 1.  That it supports the Fort Bend Independent School District election on November 6, 2007, for the issuance of $428 million in bonds for capital improvements.
