The Public Works Department recommends that City Council present the Cans Across Sugar Land City Recycling Challenge Proclamation recognizing the importance of environmental awareness and recycling in Sugar Land, and call upon residents to participate in the Cans Across Sugar Land City Recycling Challenge during the month of October 2007. |

Annually, the United States Conference of Mayors, Novelis Corporation, and Keep America Beautiful sponsor the Cans for Cash City Recycling Challenge, a national contest that rewards cities for recycling aluminum beverage cans. As a challenge to residents, the City of Sugar Land and Keep Sugar Land Beautiful (KSLB) are co-sponsoring the Cans Across Sugar Land City Recycling Challenge to collect the 63,000 aluminum cans needed to span the width of Sugar Land, estimated at 4.7 miles. Aluminum cans will be collected October 1st to October 30th at the following locations: City of Sugar Land Recycle Centers § 113 Gillingham Lane §
4802 Oilfield Road Raising Cane’s Restaurant §
1529 S. Highway 6 Recycle for Reuse Event § October 13th (10:00 am to 2:00 pm) FBISD Administration Building 16431 Lexington Boulevard Cans Across Sugar Land Collection Event § October 27th (10:00 am – 2:00 pm) Eldridge Park 2511 Eldridge Park The City of Sugar Land and KSLB will recognize the individual or group within the following three categories who collects the most aluminum cans and donates them at the Cans Across Sugar Land Collection Event on October 27th at Eldridge Park: § Family (Up to 10 people) § Business or Small Group (10 to 100 people) § Large Group (More than 100 people) The aluminum cans collected during this challenge will be recycled at Julius Metals, and the money raised through the recycling efforts will be given to KSLB to promote recycling throughout the community. |
