Executive Summary

Fire Prevention Week (FPW) was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, and destroyed more than 17,400 structures.  In 1925, the President of the United States signed a proclamation proclaiming a national observance during the second week of October as FPW. This year, FPW will be observed the week of October 7th through the 13th.

During this period, the Fire Department will focus on public safety by informing the public about the importance of fire prevention and also by placing extra emphasis on targeting our youth.  The Fire Department’s Community Preparedness Division will be visiting third grade classes throughout the month of October to educate them with a FPW presentation. The theme for this year’s FPW will be “Practice Your Escape Plan.” Firefighters will also be visiting area daycares and preschools.  In addition, there will be FPW banners at all of the fire stations and FPW related materials will be on hand to pass out to interested citizens.   Lastly, this year we are adding a third grade FPW poster contest to raise parental awareness and reinforce our safety message with the students.

I, David Wallace, Mayor of the City of Sugar Land, hereby proclaim the week of October 7-13, 2007, as Fire Prevention Week. This week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which killed more than 250 persons, left 100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 buildings, and serves as the motivating force to bring the people of Sugar Land together to build a safer community.

I REQUEST THAT the CITIZENS of Sugar Land “PRACTICE YOUR ESCAPE PLAN.” Commemorate Fire prevention week by participating in prevention activities at home, work, and school. Therefore, By taking these steps you will make your homes and families safe from fire.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have set my hand and seal of the City of Sugar Land on this 2nd day of October, the year two thousand and SEVEN.
