Recommended Action

Recognize the City for receipt of the Distinguished Budget Award from the Government Finance Officers Association for the Fiscal Year 2007-08 Budget Document.

Executive Summary

The City regularly participates in the peer recognition programs offered by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada.  GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Awards program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.

 

The City has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its FY08 budget.  This award represents significant achievement by the City.  It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. 

 

Budgets are evaluated on the following categories and must be rated as proficient in all four categories to receive the award:

·        Policy Document

·        Financial Plan

·        Operations Guide

·        Communications Device

 

The City has received the award for twelve consecutive years; this year’s document also received “Special Capital Recognition” for the budget period of 2006.  While 1,127 entities received the distinguished budget award, only nine (9) received the special capital recognition.

 

The City’s budget represents the financial plan for the operations of the city and consolidates the good work of the City Council, the City Manager, the departments and the Budget Office.  The budget process is led by  Linda Symank, Director of Fiscal Services, and includes specific support from:
