Recommended Action

 

Adopt on first and final consideration, in accordance with Article II of the City Charter, Ordinance No. 1686 declaring the results of the election held May 10, 2008, to elect a Mayor and Council Member At Large Position One and Position Two.

 

Executive Summary

 

As required by the election code the official returns of the election have been prepared and are to be canvassed by City Council.  Ordinance No. 1686 canvasses the election and declares the results of the election pursuant to provisions of the election code.

A certificate of election will be issued to each person declared to have been elected to the respective office at the election on May 10, 2008.

 

Because none of the candidates for Mayor received a majority vote, the mayor shall certify in writing for placement on a runoff election ballot the names of the runoff candidates and deliver the certification to the city secretary as required by section 2.027 of the Election Code.

 

The run-off election will be held on June 21, 2008; City voting precincts and polling places for the City of Sugar Land for this election will be the same as in the general election; dates and times for early voting by personal appearance will be as follows:

ORDINANCE NO. 1686

 

AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF SUGAR LAND, TEXAS, CANVASSING THE RETURNS AND DECLARING THE RESULTS OF AN ELECTION HELD ON MAY 10, 2008, TO ELECT A MAYOR AND TWO AT-LARGE COUNCIL MEMBERS.

 

WHEREAS, the City Council called an election to be held on May 10, 2008, to elect a mayor and two at-large council members; and

 

WHEREAS, notice of the election was given as required by law and the returns of the election have been made by the proper officers and canvassed by the City Council; NOW, THEREFORE;

 

                                       BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL

                                         OF THE CITY OF SUGAR LAND, TEXAS:  

 

Section 1.  That at the election, the following votes were cast for the following candidates:
