Recommended Action

The Public Works and Utilities Departments recommend that City Council present an Environmental Week Proclamation recognizing the importance of environmental education and awareness in the City of Sugar Land and call upon residents to participate in the Environmental Week activities on April 13 – 19, 2008.  In addition, staff also recommends that City Council recognize the 2008 Environmental Steward of the Year and the winners of the annual Water Conservation Book Cover Contest.

Executive Summary

In support of the City’s Environmental Week activities, staff requests that Council issue an Environmental Week Proclamation recognizing the importance of environmental education and awareness within the City of Sugar Land. More than 35 years ago, Earth Day began as a day of national environmental recognition, and over the years, it has evolved into a global campaign for the protection of the environment.  The City annually celebrates Earth Day, and this year, the City of Sugar Land and Keep Sugar Land Beautiful have partnered to dedicate an entire week to the celebration of our natural environment.  Throughout Environmental Week, Sugar Land residents will have several opportunities to celebrate Earth Day and the environment:

  • Sunday, April 13: The Eco-Car Show at Oyster Creek Park from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m in conjunction with the Concert in the Park at 5:00

  • Tuesday, April 15: Environmental Recognitions at the City Council Meeting

  • Wednesday, April 16: Environmental Presentation in Council Chambers from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

  • Thursday, April 17: The Eco Show on the Plaza at Town Square at 10:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 6 p.m.

  • Friday, April 18: The H2O Expo on the Plaza at Town Square from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. followed by the Environmental Movie Under the Moon at dusk.

  • Saturday, April 19: Earth Day Recycling Event at the Mercer Stadium parking lot from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

As an element of Environmental Week, the City would like to recognize Vicki Gist as the 2008 Environmental Steward of the Year. In order to receive this award, the recipient must reside or work within the City of Sugar Land and have made singular efforts on behalf of the environment within the City.

In order to recognize the importance of our water resources, the City annually sponsors the Water Conservation Book Cover Contest and encourages children to illustrate a water conservation or pollution prevention themed design. This contest is open to elementary school children throughout Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) and boasts approximately 300 participants each year.  In order to educate the community, the winners’ artwork appears on FBISD book covers the following school year.  The City would like to recognize the winners of the 2008 Water Conservation Book Cover Contest:
