Authorize purchase of 43 portable and 4 mobile radios from Motorola, Inc. through the High Tech Replacement Fund in the amount of $196,445.41 |
Executive Summary |
The Police Department has a large number of portable radios that are no longer reliable and past their normal life expectancy. The Fire Department is also requesting replacement of three portable radios. Reliability is a matter of safety for Police and Fire personnel. When public safety personnel are away from emergency vehicles, portable radios become the only source of communication with dispatch. The forty three portable radios being requested for replacement were purchased from 1996 to 1998. Estimated useful life is five years, so all radios being replaced have been utilized well beyond their estimated life. During the 2004 interoperability project, the majority of mobile radios were replaced. Some older radios remain that were updated instead of replaced, and now these radios are becoming unreliable due to age. Three mobile radios for the criminal investigations division and one base station in the jail are recommended for replacement. Interoperability requires that all radios be from a single source. Motorola radios were selected based on their reliability. These radios are purchased through an inter-local agreement with H-GAC. |
