Executive Summary |
||||
|
As discussed with City Council during the budget workshops, the fiscal year 2006/07 budget includes non-recurring funding toward the purchase of rifles and handguns for officers as part of the implementation of a uniform firearm program for the police department. The first step in this program is the acquisition of 70 rifles utilizing an existing state contract with G.T. Distributors. Due to the increase in our population and the density of our commercial areas, the safest alternate weapon to use is a rifle in situations that go beyond the normal use of handguns. Rifles have a high degree of accuracy, thus lessening the danger to the general public in an incident of deadly force in a populated area. Furthermore, all officers will be carrying the same weapon, which will provide for uniform training and proficiency, which is one of the department’s goals of standardized weapons. The Police Department is requesting City Council authorization to purchase 70 patrol rifles from G.T. Distributors. |
