Literacy Awareness Month
Whereas, the National Institute of Literacy estimates 21% of adults experience literacy issues severely impacting their lives, their ability to work productively, and their full participation as citizens and residents of Fort Bend County; and
Whereas, Literacy Council of Fort Bend County provides programs and services designed to raise literacy skills and increase self-confidence enhancing employment opportunities and generating hopes for a better future; and
Whereas, since 1987, Literacy Council of Fort Bend County volunteers donated more than 373,300 hours tutoring, serving more than 15,200 students, and returning an estimated value of $9.3 million in literacy services.
Now, Therefore, I, David Wallace, on behalf of the members of City Council, and by the virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Sugar Land, Texas, do hereby recognize October 2006 as Literacy Awareness Month and commend Literacy Council of Fort Bend County for making a difference in the lives of others and encourage community involvement and support of literacy programs.
