Executive Summary

We have been invited by the Anti-Defamation League in cooperation with respected leaders from Sugar Land to join its Community of Respect program. The program provides a framework for fighting hatred and promoting respect in eight different spheres of society:  businesses, law enforcement, places of worship, media, sports and entertainment, government, higher education, and nonprofit community groups.

This proclamation serves as the City of Sugar Land’s commitment to the “Community of Respect” program and our willingness to become partners with the Anti-Defamation League to promote respect and celebrate diversity while fighting all forms of prejudice.

COMMUNITY OF RESPECT

Whereas,     the core value of a “Community of Respect” is to promote a common vision, while welcoming a rich and diverse understanding and interaction; and

Whereas,     fostering an environment of civility and mutual respect by preventing acts of bias, and discrimination provides a community where we can live, work and grow in a culture that appreciates and values individual differences; and

Whereas,     our diversity is our strength, together we can create a respectful and inclusive environment that provides support and the opportunity necessary for each member of the community to prosper and achieve; and

Whereas,     it is the responsibility of everyone to help create a welcoming community and to discover that the one who is deemed “different” is not really different but that “we are all really the same”.

Now, Therefore, I, David Wallace, on behalf of the members of City Council, and by the virtue of the authority vested in me as Mayor of the City of Sugar Land, Texas, do hereby proclaim the City of Sugar Land as a “Community of Respect” and encourage all organizations and citizens to share in the responsibility to create a rich and diverse community where everyone is respected and valued.
