Recommended Action

The Parks and Recreation Department recommends that Mayor and City Council accept donations valued at $3,200 from Keep Sugar Land Beautiful (KSLB), Frito-Lay, The Gulf Coast Master Naturalists, Girl Scout Troop #107 and the Sugar Land Garden Club.

Executive Summary

The Parks and Recreation Department has received the following donations.

Donations ($3,200):

  • KSLB has donated 5000 native tree seedlings valued at $2,500.
  • Frito-Lay has donated 300 seedlings, valued at $150, as part of the National Arbor Day Foundation’s "Making America a Little Greener" program.
  • The Gulf Coast Master Naturalists have donated 100 seedlings, valued at $50.
  • Girl Scout Troop #107 has donated one Mexican Sycamore valued at $250. This tree has been planted in Oyster Creek Park in memory of their leader, Cindy Dawson.
  • The Sugar Land Garden Club has donated one 45 gal. Schumard Red Oak valued at $250. This tree was planted in Imperial Park in celebration of Arbor Day.

The Parks and Recreation Department is working with Keep Sugar Land Beautiful (KSLB) and Fluor on a volunteer reforestation project in celebration of Arbor Day.  The event will be held at Sugar Land Memorial Park on Saturday, February 24th between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. These trees, along with the 192 recently donated by Chevron, will be planted on the islands in the lake as well as in an area parallel to the future extension of University Boulevard. Fluor has committed approximately 50 staff members to help with the reforestation. The Parks and Recreation Department and KSLB are also seeking participation from ROTC groups at local high schools as well as local Boy and Girl Scout troops.  We would like to encourage other residents and staff to participate. Overall, we anticipate approximately 200 volunteers.

The City extends our gratitude for these generous donations to the City of Sugar Land.
