Proclamation of February 6, 2007 as Arbor Day in the City of Sugar Land.

Executive Summary

The City of Sugar Land and Keep Sugar Land Beautiful (KSLB) are supporting Arbor Day by proclaiming February 6, 2007 as Arbor Day in Sugar Land.  In celebration, KSLB and Sterling McCall Automotive Group have partnered with the Texas Forest Service to bring the National Arbor Day Poster Contest to Fort Bend Independent School District.

With the goal of increasing knowledge about the value of trees in our environment, the theme for this year’s poster contest is “Trees are Terrific…and forests are too!”  An awards ceremony was held for the top three poster winners from each participating school, and prizes were donated and awarded by Sterling McCall Automotive Group.  The state and national levels will also pay tribute to winners in those levels with special prizes and award ceremonies.

Arbor Day began in 1872 when J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees.  This holiday was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska.  Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world.

As part of Sugar Land’s Arbor Day celebration, the Parks and Recreation Department is working with KSLB and Fluor on a volunteer reforestation project at Sugar Land Memorial Park scheduled for February 24th between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.

Fluor employees recently contacted KSLB to inform them of a 10,000-seedling surplus from the Trees for Houston reforestation project in which Fluor was involved.  The Parks and Recreation Department has agreed to work with KSLB in planting 5,000 of these seedlings along with the 192 trees donated by Chevron, 300 seedlings recently donated by Frito-Lay as part of the National Arbor Day Foundation’s "Making America a Little Greener" program and 100 seedlings donated by the Gulf Coast Master Naturalists. The 5,592 trees will be planted in Sugar Land Memorial Park with the help of approximately 200 volunteers.
