Mayor James A. Thompson

A native Texan, James A. "Jimmy" Thompson graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University and was a United States Air Force C-130 pilot from 1970 to 1979. Thompson is the founder and president of TEAM Associates, Inc., a manufacturer's representative sales agency servicing industrial and contractors supply distributors in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Thompson was the first resident-elected board member of Fort Bend Municipal Utility District No. 12 and later was appointed to Fort Bend Levee Improvement District No. 2, for which he served 15 years.

Thompson served from 1996 to 2005 on the Sugar Land City Council as a District and At-Large council member and is serving his first term as mayor of Sugar Land. He was involved with major mobility improvements; the creation of Town Square; the development of Sugar Land Regional Airport; numerous additions to the City Park system; acquisition of the land for the Brazos River Corridor; and the establishment of the University of Houston campus in Sugar Land.

In 2005, Gov. Rick Perry appointed Thompson to the Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents; he currently serves as chairman. He also serves on the Sugar Land Advisory Council with the University of Houston System and the Local Development Board for Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Healthcare System. Additionally, Thompson serves on the U.S. Conference of Mayors committees for Tourism, Arts, Parks, Entertainment & Sports and Energy.

Thompson and his wife, Gay, have been married since 1970. They have three children -- Michael, Tara and Meredith.
