Man Drives onto Railroad, Struck by Train

Sugar Land, TX - Sugar Land police and firefighters responded to an accident today involving a train and a passenger car.

Just before 5:45 a.m., a westbound train struck a vehicle west of Main Street and Highway 90A. The investigation revealed a Fresno man entered a railroad crossing at Brooks Street and intentionally drove his vehicle onto the railroad tracks. The vehicle was traveling eastbound on the railroad prior to the collision. The train pushed the vehicle and its driver toward Ulrich Street, where the vehicle was thrown from the tracks, and the train stopped.

The man was treated at the scene and transported by helicopter to Memorial Hermann downtown. His injuries were serious, but he is expected to survive. Several crossings were closed for an hour and a half while Union Pacific employees inspected the railroad for damage.

No charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.
